What to write in a wedding card: 15 messages for every kind of guest
In a wedding card, congratulate the couple by name, share one thing you admire about them together or a short memory, and wish them a happy marriage. If you are giving money or a gift, a brief line acknowledging it is fine. Two to four warm sentences is ideal, signed with a closing like "With love."

step 01 · who it is for
Wedding cards pile up on a table during the reception and get read slowly in the weeks after. Couples often keep them for years, and the ones they reread are the cards with a personal line: a memory of how they met, a note about how they are together, a wish that clearly came from someone who knows them.
The messages below are written for close friends, family, coworkers, and guests who could not attend. Use one as it is or as a starting point, then add a detail about the couple.
A card is a constrained format: a fixed amount of space, read once in front of other people and then possibly kept for years. That constraint is what makes it hard.
Wedding cards are read in a stack, often weeks later, and most of them say the same three things. Congratulations, best wishes, and a hope for happiness.

What actually works in a wedding message
The most common failure is spending the opening line on the occasion itself, which everyone can already see printed on the front of the card.
Say what they are like together. You have outside information about their dynamic that they cannot access themselves.
Timing and etiquette for wedding messages
For a second marriage, or a couple who have been together many years already, acknowledging the real history is better than pretending it starts today.

A simple formula for a wedding card
Congratulate the couple by name, then add one personal sentence: something you admire about them together, a memory, or how happy you are to see them married. Finish with a wish for their future, such as a long, happy marriage, adventures, or a home full of love.
Keep it to two to four sentences unless you are very close. The couple will be reading dozens of cards, and a short message with one genuine detail is more memorable than a long one.
Mentioning money or a gift
If you are giving cash or a check, a simple line works: "Please accept this gift with our warmest wishes" or "A little something toward your honeymoon." There is no need to mention the amount. For a registry gift, you can mention it briefly or not at all, since the couple will see what you chose.
What to write for close friends and family
Close friends and family can be more personal. Share a memory of the moment you knew they were right for each other, tease gently about a shared joke, or welcome a new member into the family. These cards are often the ones couples treasure most.
If you are giving a toast at the wedding, keep the card different from your speech. A private line in the card can say what you would not say in front of a room.
Wedding cards from coworkers and acquaintances
For colleagues or guests you do not know well, a warm, traditional wish is perfect: "Congratulations on your wedding. Wishing you both a lifetime of happiness." Sign with your full name so the couple knows who sent it, especially at a large wedding.
If you could not attend, a card is still a thoughtful gesture. Congratulate them, say you are sorry to miss the day, and express your hope to celebrate together soon.

What goes wrong
Writing only your name
A signature alone feels like an afterthought. Add at least one warm sentence.
Jokes about marriage being a burden
Skip old jokes about losing freedom. Celebrate the partnership.
Mentioning past relationships
Keep the focus entirely on the couple and their future.
Common questions
- What is the best wedding message?
- Name one specific thing rather than offering a general wish. A single real observation, written plainly, outperforms three polished sentences that could be sent to anyone.
- What should you avoid writing?
- Avoid anything that could be sent unchanged to a different person. Generic warmth reads as obligation, and the reader can usually tell within the first line.
- How long should a wedding message be?
- Three to five sentences. One observation about them as a pair is worth more than any amount of good wishes.
- What do you write in a wedding card with money?
- Congratulate the couple, add a personal wish, and mention the gift simply: "Please accept this gift with our warmest wishes for your future together." There is no need to state the amount.
- How do you sign a wedding card?
- Use "With love" or "Love always" for close friends and family, and "Best wishes" or "Warmly" for colleagues and acquaintances. Sign with your full name if the couple might not recognize your first name alone.
- Should I address both names in a wedding card?
- Yes. Address the card to both people, using their names, even if you know one partner better. The card celebrates them as a couple.
